There are people who don’t like house chores and keep things tidy. But, there are those who really don’t like them! Regardless of what category you fit, you probably still want to keep your living space free of clutter and dust. In other words, neat and tidy. This article will show you how to do this with minimal effort so you can enjoy your free time more.

There are five general rules of keeping your flat tidy with minimal effort.

Less is more

If you have fewer things in your house, there will be less to clean. Making it so much easier to be tidy. This minimalistic approach really does miracles. You will not only save money on buying unnecessary things but also save yourself time cleaning them! Action: Declutter your house. Go through your belongings and let go of the ones you no longer use or need. You can donate them to charity shops.

Have a place for everything

It is much harder to keep things tidy, when there is no proper place to store them. Countertops and tables full of stuff or plenty of random junk on the floor create an impression of clutter. Action: Invest in cabinets, shelves and containers to keep your things organised.

Clean as you go

Cleaning as you go may not sound appealing at first as it creates an idea of constantly having to tidy things up. However, it is all about your perception. Whenever you pick something up, place it back there when you are done with it. For example, when you finish reading your book, put it on the shelf where it was in the first place. This can’t really classify as tidying up, but it allows you to keep things tidy. Action: Set your mind on keeping things in their places.

Daily clean

This one encompasses the ‘clean as you go mentality’ I discussed above. On average, there are only a few things you will need to do daily to keep your house tidy. One of them is to make your bed in the morning. This one can be a great start to your day; the first accomplishment of your day which makes you feel good about yourself. Another thing you will need to keep in mind is to clean the dishes, as this accumulates daily.

The best way to tackle those is to wash them as you use them, during or immediately after cooking. There are many things you can do while you wait for something in the kitchen. For instance, you can put clean dishes away from the drying rack while you are waiting for the water to boil to have your tea.

Weekly clean

Weekly cleaning sounds dreadful, but it doesn’t have to be so long as you obey the three rules of tidiness mentioned above. When the weekend comes, you will only have four general things that need to be done to keep your house in a spotless condition. These are vacuuming, moping, dusting and doing the laundry. The kitchen and bathroom are the only two places where you might want to do some extra cleaning depending on the condition.

The best way to tackle weekly clean and minimise the time spent doing it, is to multitask wherever possible. For example, load your washing machine with dirty clothes first and while it’s washing, you can do other tasks like hoovering or moping. By the time you are done with those, your washing cycle will be over too and you can put your clothes to dry.

I put together a list of common house chores which you can use to draw inspiration from when wondering what needs doing.

As you can see, keeping things clean and tidy in your house is not impossible. If you stick to the rules outlined in this article, you have a decent chance to keep your house in a spotless condition without putting too much effort into it. Happy cleaning! Oh yes, just don’t forget to take out the trash once in a while 😉
